Location Recce

When thinking about where I am going to record my radio programme, I would like to record in these areas:

Chadwell Heath Academy

When thinking about my radio show, Chadwell Heath Academy is the perfect environment to film. This is because the main part of my radio show is set in a school environment. Considering on choosing this location to film, I will have resources in the school. This will help me create sounds and be able to change the volume of sounds as the school has multiple areas I can film in. This can save time when I am editing my radio show. Furthermore, when looking at this location, I am able to have access to all the recording equipment I need. This is because this is where they store all the equipment. Also this is where I can start to upload my recordings in a short period of time after I finish recording. When I compare this to where I would have to record in another location, I would have to upload another day. When looking at the other locations I could film in, I can see that it would not be as effective. This is because when I am recording my radio show, it is based on students in school. This means that I may not be able to portray this to the audiences well if I was to record in the other locations for the main parts of my radio programme.

A118 Highroad

Another location I would consider filming in is the A118 highroad. This is because some parts of my radio programme needs to be students walking to another location. Furthermore, when looking at the benefits of recording in this location, cars are going to be driving passed. This means that I would not need to place other recordings in editing as there are cars sounds in the background. This will allow me to save time. However, one thing I will need to consider when I am recording in this location is that the microphone can be sensitive to these sounds and may impact the other audio that is being recorded. This will disrupt the audio and will be difficult to edit when I am in the post-production stage of my radio programme. One way I will solve this problem is to not film directly where the cars are but somewhere I can still hear the cars passing. Also, with recording in this location, I will not be able to get more equipment if I would need to. This means that if I would like to get another microphone for another voice actor, I would need to go back to school and go and collect the equipment.

Goodmayes station

Finally, another location I would consider filming in is Goodmayes station. This is a train station where I would like my radio programme to end. When looking at this location, I will be able to capture the environment and the sounds that I would not get in the other locations. When looking into where this matches in my radio programme, the students are getting prepared to go out and will need to get a train to get there. This will be beneficial to my radio programme as I can take advantage of the sounds in the location. Despite this, before I start to record, I may need to seek permission to record others in the train station. One way I will solve this problem is speaking to the guard in the station and the people so that I have permission to film. This can lead to a lot of time and resources being used up and could impact on how much time I have left to record in the location. This can lead to me having to come back for multiple days and could take up to a week to ensure that I can get the best sounds possible when I am recording my radio programme.

Sound elements definitions - UNIT 16

Sound elements definitions:
  • Sound format - This is where sound is saved as a different format depending on where the sound needs to be saved/uploaded. I will need to consider the sound format when recording so that I can extract these and place them in a video so that it can be heard correctly.
  • Storage - A method of saving a file in a specific area on a specific device with the capacity it is given. I will need to consider the storage when recording so that I can ensure that all the recordings are saved in a specific place so that I can place this all in one place
  • Compression - Reducing sounds that are above a certain threshold. I will need to consider this when I am filming as if the files are too big, I will need to compress the files so that it can still be heard but also allow the file size to decrease.
  • Size versus quality
    • Lossy - This is where the file is compressed and the quality of the sound is reduced permanently due to some of the elements being eliminated.
    • Lossless - This is where the file is compressed and every single piece of data is still there. This shows that there is no loss of quality from the original recording.
    • Bit rates - Are a measurement of the amount of data that is processed per second.
    • File size - This is showing how big the file is on any device. There a different file sizes depending on the amount of recording it has.

Techniques and processes used to create sound elements - UNIT 16

In this video I was asked to create a variety of foley sounds and wild tracks using different recording equipment. In the video I had use:

  • A Lavaliere microphone
  • A cannon in-build camera microphone
  • iPhone voice recorder
Below is the evidence to show how I recorded these sounds:

When looking at the pros and cons of using these recording equipment's I had found that:

Recording equipment

Pros

Cons

A Lavalier microphone

Clear and crisp. This allowed the audio to be heard well.

When filming, I had to hold the camera and microphone. This made it hard for me to record the audio well.

A cannon in-build camera microphone

The audio quality of the recordings were sort of clear and was easy to record.

When filming, the camera picked up on the other surrounding noises which made it harder to get the audio I wanted.

iPhone voice recorder

The audio that was recorded was clear and was easy to record.

When I was filming, the iPhone recorded very quietly even though I was next to the objects while recording.

Sound elements production report on experimenting and producing sound - UNIT 16

Foley effects

Foley effects are the production and recording of sound effects. They are usually created by foley artists to help enhance the realism and try to make the film as realistic as possible. Examples of foley effects that could be walking on snow, creaking doors and so much more. Some examples of this being used are in the videos below:

In this video we can see that the effects that are made produced the sound of a ticking of a clock and a heart pumping. This is used in the film ratatouille. Here we can see how foley effects are used in films.

Wild tracks

Wild tracks are audio that can be recorded on location or extra takes of lines preformed for audio only. Sometimes wild tracks are recorded separately after the production has taken place. This could be because they ran out of time or the wild track wasn't available at the time and needed to be synchronised. Below is an example of wild tracks being used:

Here we can see the film extraction. By watching this clip, we can see that wild tracks are being used. One way this is shown is the knife being used. When thinking about the production stage, we know that not an actual knife has been used. This means that the production team had to record and synchronise the sound of the knife when the protagonist was slicing the enemies throat.

Theme music

Theme music is used recorded and produced to show a specific character or team entering the scene within a film. An example of where this is shown is in Star Wars with the entering of Darth Vader:

This audio is so recognisable by the audience. This means that when the audience is watching the film, and hear the theme music they will instantly connect the theme music with the entrance of Darth Vader.

Voice-Overs

Voice-overs are used in audio-visual products in a variety of ways. However, one of the main purpose of using voice-overs is that to show a character's thoughts that are being expressed or narrating the story. Below is an example of where voice-overs are being used for this specific purpose:

When looking at this trailer, we can see that the protagonist is narrating what the world is like in that certain year. This allows the audience to understand what is happening in the trailer and appeal them to watch the film, when it later airs.

Scripted speech

Scripted speech allows the actor to deliver their lines in a specific way so that the dialogue spoken creates that specific meaning that the director wants to create. An example of where this is shown is in the radio programme: The Archers Omnibus.

By looking at the scripted speech, we can see that the actors rehearse their lines with each other so that they can act as believably as possible.

Understand how sound elements are used - UNIT 16

Educate
When looking at sounds and how they are used across media industries, one purpose of using sound elements is that they want to educate audiences. Producers use a variety of elements to try and explain information or their point of view to the audience. An example of where sound elements are used to educate the audience is in the radio drama "Rethinking Music".
I have chosen this example of educating as this episode is trying to explain and educate to the audience that the music industry is changing and what they think will happen to the future of music. The narrator states "I am a musician composer and educator. And in this series I am looking into span of music education and opportunities for students in the UK. Here we can see that the narrator is showing to the audience that he is going to go into detail music education and what opportunities there are for students in the UK.

Entertain
When looking into sound elements, there are many purposes of being used for the audience. In this instance, one purpose of using sound elements is to entertain the audience. Producers use sound elements to try and create excitement for audiences and make them laugh. An example of sound elements is used to entertain the audience is in the short clip of the film "Rush hour".
I have chosen this example to entertain the audience due to the dialogue that is said. An example of where this has entertained the audience is when the dialogue states "No, Yu is blind". This makes the audience be entertained and starts to make them laugh by the fact that the old man's name is Yu and one of the protagonists is not understanding this.

Inform
This sound element is used to tell the audience what is happening depending on the different topics that might be discussed. The purpose of using this sound element is to raise awareness about what is happening in the topic/show. An example of where this sound element is used is on TV. This is shown in the programme "BBC News".
I have chosen this example to show that this will inform the audience. The presenter is providing information to the audience that they will need to stay at home due to the pandemic. Here we can see that the presenter is using this sound element to inform the audience.
Sell products
This sound element is used to sell products to the audience. An example of where this is used is in a TV Advert "Haribo police advert". This TV advert was made to sell this product to the market. This music was used to make the audience to be attracted to purchase the sweets. The sound elements are meant to attract children and adults to purchase the sweets.

Wild Tracks
A wild track is an audio recording meant to synchronise with the media text. An example of where the sound element is used to show the wild track is in the computer game "Fortnite". In this clip, it shows there are gunshots going off maximising the effect so that the audience can believe it is real and feel more engaged within the computer game.

Atmospheric sounds
The sound element that is used here to is to try and create a certain mood. An example where atmospheric sounds are used are in the animation "SpongeBob". The sounds that are used here are short, fun and exciting. This creates a fun mood for the audience and allows them to enjoy the animation. Using these sound elements, we can see that it is allowing the audience to feel engaged in the animation.

Sound effects
This sound element is used to create an effect on the audience. For example, in the film "The Ballerina" we can see that the director placed in sounds effects to make the audience freak out with what's happening. They have used the simplest of sound effects to make the most tension within the film. Here we can see how the director has used sound effects to further enhance the meaning of the short film.
